Flu season is here.
In my house, we do as much prevention as we can, but sometimes that darn flu still gets us. When that happens, one of our go-to remedies is the Oscillococcinum homeopathic remedy. Oscillococcinum has always helped my family with flu-like symptoms, so its one of the first things I turn to when we are down with the flu.
Note: Please visit Boiron’s website for more information on Oscillococcinum and do your own research. I am not making any health claims regarding the use of Oscillococcinum with the flu, but have found it has helped my family.
(We also load up on extra Vitamin C Gummies too!)
Oscillococcinum is gaining popularity and this back-fired last year when it was out of stock everywhere. In my local groups, moms were frantically visiting store after store trying to find even one box to help their families get through the flu. Today I want to share a tip that can help you stretch this remedy – saving you money, saving on the amount of product used, and ensuring that its easier to keep a box in your home
Now, I am not a homeopathy expert nor am I a trained homeopath but I am a quick learner and I have spent a solid amount of time immersing myself in homeopathy. The majority of things I’ve learned come from Mary’s Homeopathy Study Group and one of the best tips I’ve picked up there there is a little thing called “water plussing”.
Homeopathy is different than most medicines. Its even different than holistic medicine with herbs and such. Homeopathy essentially works on the energy of an object and the more its diluted, the stronger it works. Sounds crazy, yes, I know, and I don’t totally understand it but I absolutely believe it works! So having said that, water plussing is a method where you dilute your homeopathic remedy and the remedy still works except you now have more of it.
There are other benefits to water plussing but I’ll save that for another post. For now we are just going to focus on how water plussing can stretch your Oscillococcinum remedy!
- Take a container of water, glass is preferred, (this one is the one we use) and fill it 2/3 of the way with water.
- Add one dose (whatever is listed on the label) of homeopathy pellets into the water.
- Wait for the pellets to dissolve then shake the container (or stir it if the container doesn’t have a lid.)
- Take a small amount of water (about 1/2-1 teaspoon) every time you need a dose.
- Continue on like this until either your symptoms are gone are you run out of the water.
If you run out of the water you can always make another batch and continue until symptoms are relieved.
I believe in the homeopathic “law of minimum dosage”, which means I generally don’t take a homeopathic treatment unless symptoms are present. Some people recommend taking it it as a preventative or taking it at regular intervals, which is fine for some, but there is a small risk of inducing symptoms by taking a remedy that isn’t needed. You can read more on that here. So I only take a dose if symptoms are actually present and stop as soon as they go away.
Once you are past the flu, discard any remaining water and clean your container.
By doing it this way you can use significantly less, saving you money and using less product. Depending on how much water you use, you should be able to get through an entire flu episode with only one pack of Oscillococcinum.
Note: Water plussing works for most, if not all, homeopathic remedies. You can use it with other remedies like Arnica or Apis and is really helpful if its a remedy that needs to be used numerous times in a short period of time. If you would like to learn more about homeopathy, I highly recommend Mary’s Homeopathy Study Group!
